However, choosing the right kitchen countertop for your lifestyle can be difficult. Do you need an easy-to-maintain surface? Is stain-resistance a concern? Or is style what matters most?
Granite:
If money is no object when it comes to building or renovating a kitchen, granite is typically the winner. Granite countertops provide uncompromising beauty and elegance. Though it showcases the beauty of natural stone, it is also stain-resistant and requires minimal maintenance. If sealed and installed properly, a granite kitchen countertop can last a lifetime.
Quartz:
Quartz counters are essentially engineered stone composed of natural quartz mixed with resin. You can get it in a much larger range of colours than granite, it is scratch resistant and has a non-porous surface. Quartz will last a lifetime.
Laminate, Formica:
If you’re the type of home owner who needs to switch things up every few years, then laminate countertops might be a great option for you. Laminate is among the least expensive options, it is made of layers of paper covered by thin veneer that is affixed to particle board, making it less resistant to heat. Laminate is easy to clean and does not need to be sealed. Over time, however, the surface may wear and peel making it less desirable than other options if they are within your budget.
Marble:
Marble is absolutely gorgeous, which is why you see plenty of photos online showcasing kitchen designs with marble countertops. Unfortunately marble can be very difficult to maintain, as it is a porous material that is softer than granite. Marble must be sealed regularly and is more susceptible to scratches. It does not resist heat well, so great care should be taken when placing hot items down on the countertop. Marble tends to be on the higher end of the cost scale for countertops.
Butchers block:
Wood surfaces scratch easily and require monthly sealing with oil, but they have the benefit of being refinished easily to remove stains or scratches. Without regular care, butcher block surfaces can be susceptible to absorbing odor, bacteria or moisture. The price can vary significantly based on the type of wood that’s chosen.
